Final Mise Decisions

These are our final mise decisions we have chosen as a group to stick with:
Leather Jacket:
The male protagonist in our film is going to be wearing a leather jacket at the initial stages of the film connoting the dressing code as a young adult.

Television:
In our second scene it is going to be obvious that our male protagonist will be laying on his bed looking depressed while watching TV in his room. Yet again, connoting the lifestyle of a young adult that he is.

Bed:
In the second scene the male protagonist was laying on his bed again, looking depressed which was showing connotations of a unhappy young adult.

Final Sound Decisions

Before coming to our final sound decisions, we investigated lots of different non-diegetic music tracks that we could possibly use.

For example, we looked at the Dystopia Thriller Soundtrack, after listening to it, we have decided that we are not going to use the track as it will not fit our film very well as it is too fast paced and it will confuse our audience.

We have listened to a variety of different sound tracks and after having listened to a lot of different ones, we have decided that we are going to use this track for our film opening's non-diegetic music:

We are going to use this track for our film opening as it conveys suspense and tension because there are sounds of tapping every few seconds which make it feel like there is something bad that is about to happen. This will give our audience the impression that the protagonist could be in significant danger.

Final Locations

The two final locations we are going to use are:
  • Dunmow (Chelmsford)

This is going to be our first location that we are going to use to film our interior shots. It is a village near the city of Chelmsford. One of our group  members lives there so we have decided to use his house for the exterior shots of the male protagonist laying on his bed in his room, coming downstairs and seeing his step dad standing there while he attempts to grab him and swings his hand from him and walks of.
  • Crompton Street (Chelmsford)
This is going to be our second second location which we are going to use to film the exterior shot of our male protagonist. We are going to use this location because it fits in with the type of location we are looking for and we need a location that looks like a council estate and this location looks just like one therefore, as a group we have decided to use this location. We are going to film the shots of the male protagonist walking and witnessing his mum getting brutally abused.

Sound ideas

In our film opening, we want to use non-diegetic music that will enhance the scene for the viewer. To do this, we are planning to use music that creates tension and suspense.

A few examples of music that we may use in our film opening:

Example 1 - Purple Planet Music
This type of music would be effective as it portrays a sense of tension and suspense and this would fit our genre and film opening because we want to create a rigid atmosphere for our film.

Example 2 - Dystopia Thriller Soundtrack
This would be good choice of music for our film as it suits our genre very nicely because it aims to create a thriller atmosphere which is what we want for our film. Non-diegetic music like this helps to enhance the overall watching of the film because the audience can successfully identify what could potentially happen in the film by what type of music is playing in the background.

Initial Ideas on Costumes

Costume
We needed the male to be wearing easygoing wear to represent the teenage alpha male he is. Additionally we needed the male to be dressed ideally in Khaki trousers a jumper and a leather coat, this made him look more as a youthful grown-up that a youthful youngster. In any case, we needed the mother of the male protagonist to be also wearing easygoing wear which was trousers and top which demonstrates essences of a housewife to represent that she is a risk and she additionally coordinates the male to demonstrate an association with them both.

We specifically chose these costumes for our characters because of the roles the characters will be playing. We also thought the best idea for this would be that we tell them to wear easygoing casual domestic attire which will also suit the setting of the film taking into consideration that it was filmed in a house.

Casting the Film Opening

Casting Intentions

Protagonist - Frank Large

We orignally decided to cast Frank Large but we thought that he didn't fit the character role very well so we decided against using him as our protagonist.

Protagonist - Michael Binns

We casted Michael for our film opening because we wanted him to be our film's protagonist. Our plan was to have him runaway from home and he went from his bedroom all the way downstairs and then out of the house. He is scared of his step dad and sister and therefore chose to run away from home.

Antagonist - Jason Asare

Jason was casted because he plays the role of step dad in the film where he is arguing with Michael's sister and that he doesn't want him in the house and would rather have him run away.

Actress - Gabrielle Chambers

We originally decided to cast Gabby as the step mum but after considering the ages of the characters in the film, we changed Gabby's role from step mum to sister. Furthermore, due to time constraints, we are not going to cast Gabby as one of our characters.

Actor - Paul

We casted Paul as step dad but we were not able to use him as an actor in our film opening because he was unavailable at the time of filming. Therefore, we had to substitute him for our other character Jason as step dad instead.

Mise consideration

Our Film is a Thriller so we have had to consider the mise from other Thriller films and what mise they have used and how we can incorporate the same ideas in our film. Mise is a vital part in a film as it gives the audience hints about what is going on in the film.

Mise comprises of; Lighting, Location, Costume & Props.

Lighting
As a group we have spoken about how we wanted our film to look and what lighting would be the best. We decided we wanted the lighting to be low so it gave it that tense feeling etc. Before we go out and film, we already know what lighting we want to use so therefore, it will make it much easier when we go out and film. Also in lighting we want the scene where the male protagonist is laying in his room looking sad, lonely and depressed in his room.

Location
We wanted to make sure we chose the best location for shooting our film that portrayed the film in the best way and also looked effective. We looked at many locations near and around Chelmsford (Where we live) and we came up that we would use a residential area in Chelmsford called Crompton Street  to shoot where our male protagonist would walk across a block of houses. We also are going to use a member in our group father's house to shoot the exterior shots of the male protagonist.

Costume
We wanted the male to be dressed in  casual wear to represent the teenage alpha male he is. Also we wanted the male to be dressed preferably in Khaki trousers a jumper and a leather jacket, this made him look more as a young adult that a young child. However, we wanted the mother of the male protagonist to be dressed in casual wear which was jeans and top which shows connotations of a housewife to represent that she is a danger and she also matches the male to show a clear connection to them both.

It has helped to consider the mise as we know what the best mise we must use and how it is going to be effective for our film opening.

Our Film Title

The Crompton Runaway

We have chosen this title because it gives a sense of brief narrative and it gives the audience an idea of what they can expect in the film without giving away spoliers.

PRODUCTION & POST PRODUCTION

As a group we decided that we wanted to do it this way because we feel that the cast play a major role within our film so therefore, they deserve to be credited first. Furthermore, from our research into film openings we have learnt how to structure film titles in this way followed by the production and post production team.

Our chosen institutional logo

We have chosen this logo because it portrays our company very well because it is clearly visible and it's straight to the point. I decided to design this logo like this because it conveys the polo shirt design of the main focus of our production company name, however also it looks quite aesthetically-pleasing.

Our production company logo will be still rather than animated because we are an independent production company and we do not have sufficient funds to be able to create an animated logo so therefore, our logo is going to be still and not animated.

Celebrity Casting

If we were to cast celebrities in our film, I think we would definitely stay with the middle aged Celebs. This would be purely because it would be attractive to our target audience and certification, as our audience would be able to relate to the films content and characters because of the age similarities. For the main character the person who would fit the description perfectly would be someone like Freddie Highmore as our male actor and Dakota fanning as our female actor.

These two would be perfect because they are two or Hollywood's rising stars and would be perfect for our target audience as they are both relatable as they are of similar age of our audience. They would also be perfect because of their personalities as they are both young.

Characters in our film

Our characters

Michael - He is our main protagonist in our film opening who runs away from his home in North London and is frightened of his bad-tempered step dad.

Jason - He is our main antagonist in our film opening. In the film, he is irate and he wants his step son to leave his house because he dislikes him because of what he has done in the past.

We have chosen to cast Jason and Michael as our main characters because we feel as if they fit the character roles that we are looking for and are appropriate for our film genre.

As both of our characters are male, we are aiming to attract a male audience of 15-25 year olds and males will be able to associate themselves with the characters in our film.

We initially decided to cast a female character but because of time constraints, we have had to abolish this plan so we are going to stick with two male characters and focus on attracting a male-focused audience rather than a mixed audience.

Our 25 word film brief

"Young JJ, fresh out of prison, heads for Chelmsford and before long it’s all-out gang warfare. Will his dangerous past finally catch up with him?"

By writing a short film brief, it will help us when creating our own film opening because we will know what scenes we need to shoot and therefore we will consider what types of shots we will need to film.
