RESIT-Final location decisions

Morrison car park is the option i used due to it being very spacious and it looking like a road comparing to different flooring of other car parks, also has many lampposts which is good lighting as I am filming at night. It also has a great surroundings of a busy road near it. I will film in the car moving around these streets so the location is around this part of the city.

Looking at the responses above it's clear that I need to have a sub-genre of a horror to make the film scary as 13 out of 15 people expect this. In my film opening I will create tension through sound effects that will give the impression that the film will be scary.

RESIT-Casting for new film

I needed a female to star in the opening as I wanted a woman to be the followed as I could represent many representations from this. Therefore I wanted a young adult as they can give off representations of vulnerability. Therefore I cast Charlotte Steggles who is 21 years old as the main actress as she fits what I imagined the female protagonist.

For the male antagonist I wanted someone who was a similar age to the female antagonist as I want to showcase to the audience that they were once in a relationship or they are going to be so having them similar ages can make it easier for the audience to work this out. Therefore I will cast Matt Russell who is the same age as the actress previously stated as he fits the representations i want to give off.

RESIT-Target audience questionnaire

Our questionnaire was handed out to 15 people within the audience as these people have expressed an interest in the thriller genre, this is useful for me to know as I know what the target audience wants within the genre and will make my film better. I ask a vast age range to get different ideas for the film opening as I want to meet all the demands of the audience.

RESIT- Thriller film figures

Popular films in the Thriller genre

1) Gone Girl
The description of the film read from IMDb says "With his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent". This film was directed by David Fincher and stars Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris.

This film was released in the UK on the 2nd October 2014 and on its opening weekend, it saw a gross of $37,513,109. The film was released onto 3,014 screens and its estimated total budget was $61,000,000. Gone Girl was produced and distributed by Twentieth Century Fox.

2) Se7en
This film was based upon two detectives who seek to hunt down a serial killer who used the seven deadly sins as his modus operandi. This film was directed by the same director as Gone Girl who is David Fincher. The main actor who featured in the film was Morgan Freeman. The film was released in the UK on 21st January 1996 and on the opening weekend, it earnt a total of £11,434,343 at the box office with a further gross of £17,834,902 on the 19th February 1996. The budget was estimated at $33,000,000. This film is a good film to research into for me because it will allow me to use certain bits of the film in my film opening by adapting it slightly to fit my style.

By researching into audience figures of films that are popular in the Thriller genre, it will help me when it comes to making our film opening because it will allow me to have an idea of what I want to include in our film opening but also, I can apply what I have researched into my final film opening by utilising some of the aspects of the films that I have researched into.

RESIT- location considerations for new film

As my film is situated in a car which will be moving I need a starting place where the female appears to be coming back from somewhere to her car, my idea is to film the start in a car park as the floor looks like a road rather than a drive. There are many local car parks that can be used.

This is one of the options, however this is an old image of the car park at the park 'St. Andrews' park in Chelmsford, this is good as it can appear like a road, however it tends to be quite busty as its really small so it is not likely to be the area I use.
The one above is the Morrison car park and this is the likely option due to it being very spacious and it looking like a road comparing to different floorings of other car parks, also has many lampposts which is good lighting as I am filming at night.

RESIT-prop consideration for new film

Image result for vauxhall corsa 04There is a limited amount of props needed in my film as the plot is somebody stalking  woman in a car. Therefore I need two cars as one that is following and one being followed, I also need to use a mirror within the car due to the male antagonist looking at this whilst driving. As my genre is a thriller and the setting is mysterious I don't need to need excess props as with a limited amount can cause further mystery and make people question the ones in show. I could add to my idea and make the male have a weapon or appear to have one in the piece. this could create tension and make the audience question why.Image result for blue astraAlthough the car to the left will not be seen in the film, it is a prop as it is the car appearing to stalk to other car.

RESIT- costume considerations for new film

For the male stalker there is no specific costume needed as my plan is to make the only visible feature is his face, however the idea is to have him wear dark clothes incase a part of his body is filmed. This can make him look mysterious and creepy, this is good as this is what I want him to look like to the audience and make them have this feeling towards him and the scene. He could also wear red as well as the woman to also show danger is imminent.

The female being followed has also got dark clothing to also show mystery, this is reflecting the situation. Also my idea is for her to wear bright red shoes, this is to show danger is present in film and the situation, also to make them stand out comparing to the other dark colours worn.

RESIT- research into thriller films and the genre

There was many changing of ideas when it came to genre as we started off by choosing to do an action film but in the end we decided to do a drama/thriller and this is because we are an independent company so doing an action would be very hard to pull off with the restricted budget so we thought we would change it to this which has a lower production value however still having a great story and making sure it is the genre that we are saying it is. we've taken many films as our inspiration and examples of these are the business and the kidulthood trilogy, this is because these are ideal for the company as it is gritty dramas which is a genre that will have low production costs and normally don't have huge names unless later films get big.
the picture is for just thrillers and not dramas
These are the top 10 rated films on imbd in our genre, majority of them are similar as they are crime dramas with violence showcased, the subjects covered in this genre can be varied due to the narrative of it, also it depends on what genre it leads to most as our film we are swaying more to a thriller instead of a domestic drama even though we are showcasing areas and nits of both.

For thrillers there is an expected atmosphere which is tense, this can be shown through the use of music which can be slow or fast paced to build tension in the clip, this also can be done with the editing of the piece as it depends on the atmosphere the editor wants as slow and fast paced editing can both build tension is required in this genre.A thriller for the most part comprises of a distinction between the protagonist and antagonist, when there is an interruption to the harmony. At that point the story demonstrates a series of negative occasions building pressure and tension for the peak. The point of the protagonist is to establish equity, while the antagonist looks to devastate it.

Conventions of a thriller normally include the following:
-Low key lighting
-Quick cuts
-Shadows
-Tension music
-Changes in the angle of shots
-Diegetic sound of breathing
-Sting sounds
-Black and white shots
-Montage of shots
-Protagonist is in the mercy of the antagonist
Characters:
The protagonist is regularly an overcome male who tries to maintain the balance. The antagonist will have a concealed character that the group of onlookers will reveal as the film advances. Regularly the opposer goes out for vengeance from a past occasion.

Themes of a thriller:
The story line will be planned so the audience will imagine that it can really transpire, which will make them terrified.
Image result for thriller scenes

Cinematography of a thriller:
There will be a ton of close ups and extreme close ups of the hero character, this is regularly used to draw attention to their feelings, likewise it can be utilised to concentrate on props to help the story. The shots of the rival character will be sliced rapidly and will plan to hide their personality, for instance, a shot from the back, a calm shot, an outline or shadow of the character.

Editing of a thriller:
The director will incorporate lots of jump cuts because there will be things happening that the audience will be unconscious of what is yet basic for the film to bode well. Cross cutting is a key point in editing as it is utilised to manufacture anticipation which is basic for a thriller.

Sound in a thriller:
Music is fundamental in any film to comprehend the mind-set of the characters and indicate a huge part in the film. In a thriller it includes anticipation and pressure. It will regularly begin at a moderate pace and after that development to make the shots more sensational for the crowd.

Mise En Scene:
The area is critical for the film since it will help the group of audience build up the topic.

Lighting is regularly relaxed however, low-key lighting is often used when tension builds up.

Costumes: Antagonist will be in dull garments on the off chance that you see them. protagonist will be in customary day garments.

Rough Cut 3

Feedback from Mrs Willcox:
  • Add in the film title at around 30 seconds
  • Add in some more transitions to improve the continuity
  • Add in a second production text logo
In order to make our final cut the best that we can, we are going to act upon the feedback we have been given by Mrs Willcox. To do this, we are going to add in the film title as this would be an obvious flaw if it was not added because the audience would have no idea what the film is actually called so they would be bored right from the start of the film and therefore, it would highly unlikely for them to continue watching the film. We are also going to insert more transitions into our film so that it will improve the continuity so there won't be jump cuts and therefore, it won't be disorientating for the audience to watch. Also, we are going to add in a second affiliate production text logo to show our association with our affiliate production company.

By acting upon our feedback and adding improvements to our film opening, it will improve our overall grade because it will show the examiner that we are capable of acting upon our given feedback in order to improve our work.

Final Mise Decisions

These are our final mise decisions we have chosen as a group to stick with:
Leather Jacket:
The male protagonist in our film is going to be wearing a leather jacket at the initial stages of the film connoting the dressing code as a young adult.

Television:
In our second scene it is going to be obvious that our male protagonist will be laying on his bed looking depressed while watching TV in his room. Yet again, connoting the lifestyle of a young adult that he is.

Bed:
In the second scene the male protagonist was laying on his bed again, looking depressed which was showing connotations of a unhappy young adult.

Final Sound Decisions

Before coming to our final sound decisions, we investigated lots of different non-diegetic music tracks that we could possibly use.

For example, we looked at the Dystopia Thriller Soundtrack, after listening to it, we have decided that we are not going to use the track as it will not fit our film very well as it is too fast paced and it will confuse our audience.

We have listened to a variety of different sound tracks and after having listened to a lot of different ones, we have decided that we are going to use this track for our film opening's non-diegetic music:

We are going to use this track for our film opening as it conveys suspense and tension because there are sounds of tapping every few seconds which make it feel like there is something bad that is about to happen. This will give our audience the impression that the protagonist could be in significant danger.
